Let’s face it. Buying an electric bike isn’t just about picking a colour or style. When the fit is off, the whole ride just feels uncomfortable from the start. Whether you're heading to work, tackling hills, or just getting out for some air, your e-bike has to fit properly. The big question people ask us at Yasyas is: What size electric bike do I need?

It’s a good question, and not always as simple as it seems.

Why Size Really Does Matter

As soon as you hop on a bike that’s not made for your size, you’ll feel something’s off. Your knees feel tight. Your back starts to ache. You might be overreaching or feel cramped. It’s uncomfortable, and it takes the fun out of cycling. A comfortable electric bike size can make a big difference, especially if you ride often or cover longer distances.

Frame Size Basics – Get This Bit Right First

The most important place to start is the electric bike frame size. You’ll often see frame sizes listed in either inches or centimetres, which basically shows how tall the seat tube is from bottom to top. If you’re tall, go for a bigger frame. If you’re shorter, look at something smaller. It might seem like a simple step, but plenty of people end up choosing the wrong size.

We’ve built a clear Yasyas electric bike size chart to help, but the best fit also depends on your inseam and your riding style.

Not Just Height – Your Inseam Matters

Your inseam, which is the length from the inside of your leg to the floor, can often be a better indicator of the right frame size than height alone. It also helps determine the right e-bike standover height. This refers to the gap between your body and the top bar when you’re standing with one leg on each side of the bike.

To figure out your inseam, stand flat against a wall, hold a book upright between your thighs, then check the distance from the book’s top edge down to the floor. That number is important.

E-Bike Sizing Is Not Always Like a Regular Bike

It’s easy to assume that ebike sizing is the same as sizing a normal bike. Although the general principles are alike, e-bikes carry more weight because of the built-in motor and battery system. This changes how the frame handles and shifts your centre of gravity. That extra weight makes getting the right fit even more essential for comfort and control.

Different Bike Styles Use Different Size Guides

The type of electric bike also affects the size you need. Here’s how it breaks down:

  • Off-road riders should check our electric mountain bike size chart

  • If you’ll mostly be sticking to tarmac or flat cycle paths, check out our size suggestions for electric road bikes.

  • If you’re after something that does both, use our electric hybrid bike size guide

  • Commuters may want a folding electric bike size that’s more compact

  • Step-through electric bike sizing is ideal if you want easy mounting and dismounting

Each bike type handles differently, so it’s worth checking the fit for your chosen style.

Wheel Size Based on Height

Taller riders tend to need larger electric bike wheel sizes for height. Larger wheels like 27.5 or 29 inches tend to feel steadier and roll more easily across different surfaces. Shorter riders might be more comfortable on 26 inch wheels. It’s all about balance and control.

For Short, Tall, and Everyone in Between

At Yasyas, we cater to all riders. If you’re under 5 foot 3, a 14 to 15 inch frame usually works. If you’re around 5 feet 4 to 5 feet 7 tall, a frame size in the 16 to 17 inch range usually works well. From 5 foot 8 up to 6 foot, look at 18 to 19 inches. Over 6 foot? You’ll need 20 inches or more.

Our electric bike size for short riders and electric bike size for tall riders guides are there to make things easier.

There are also separate options in our women’s electric bike size guide, which often includes smaller or step-through frames. The men’s electric bike size guide usually leans towards standard straight frames. For younger users, we offer electric bike size for teenagers as well.

Choosing the Wrong Size Can Cause Real Issues

We’ve seen it before. Someone picks a bike that’s far too big or too small and ends up sore, frustrated or even injured. If you’re wondering what happens if my electric bike is too big or too small, it can seriously affect your riding comfort and control. That’s why getting the sizing right from the start really matters.

Can You Make Adjustments Later?

You can fine-tune certain parts. Adjust the electric bike saddle height, move the handlebars to improve reach, or even change the stem or seatpost. But if the frame size itself is way off, these tweaks won’t fix it. That’s why the frame is the first thing to get right.

What Sizes Are Common in the UK?

Most electric bike frame sizes in the UK fall into the following ranges:

  • Small: 14 to 16 inches

  • Medium: 17 to 19 inches

  • Large: 20 to 22 inches

Different brands may label them slightly differently, and yes, electric bike frame sizes are measured in both inches and centimetres depending on the model.

Does Weight Matter?

Rider weight doesn’t directly change the size you need, but it does matter for the bike’s weight limit and long-term durability. It’s best to choose a bike that supports your build comfortably. That way, you’re not putting unnecessary pressure on the motor or wheel system as you ride.
